A heaven for nature lovers - Maharashtra is a home to large number of animal and bird species including the tiger, crocodile, bison, gawa, neelgai, wild deer, sambars and rare migratory birds. The state has taken adequate steps towards setting up many wildlife parks and sanctuaries to protect these regions and promote them as tourist attractions. The parks offer splendid opportunities to see a variety of wildlife in a spectacularly natural setting.

Nagzira Wild Life Sanctuary

Beautiful things come in small packages. This is the smallest of parks that we have to offer, but the most picturesque, with its complete food chain intact. A walk in the bush and nature trails are the highlights here, among very beautiful sightings of wildlife in open 4x4 vehicles, which let you feel the very essence of the forest. A nightout on a machaans near a waterhole is a thrilling experience. The silence, the calm, the crisp cool air and the jungle sounds makes one lose track of time. The lack of electricity here has helped the park retain the charm of untouched splendour that is Nagzira.

The Tadoba National Park

Tadoba National Park is the oldest national park of the state of Maharashtra. It derives its name from the local god "Taru". This is a large park spread over many acres of lush green forested land. Situated 45 kms from Chandrapur, south-west from Kanha National park. You can arrange to stay in the park. The best time is from March to May. Tadoba is an extremely beautiful jungle of mixed teak forests around a tranquil lake. 

The Tadoba National Park has migratory ducks visiting its lake, and also swarms with crocodiles. The rest houses are ideal for nature lovers as it commands a lovely view of the lake and the distant green hills beyond. Late nights are ideal times to see Tiger, Leopards, Gaur, Nilgai, Sambar and Chital. The speciality here is water birds.

The Dajipur Bison Sanctuary Melghat Tiger Reserve

The jungle resort of Dajipur is situated on the border of Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts, near the backwaters of the Radhanagari dam. Surrounded by rugged mountains and dense forests, this secluded area is completely cut-off from human habitation. A home to bison, wild Deers, Chital, Gawa and many more spectacular wild animals and birds, Dajipur is an exciting and beautiful holiday getaway.

This Reserve is in the enchanting sylvan beauty of the woodlands and greenery of Melghat, in the Amravati district, roams the tiger, and it is here that a greater part of Project Tiger is being implemented.The jungle resort is a scenic spot near the backwaters of the Radhanagri dam. It is surrounded by hilly areas and thick forests abundant in wildlife.

Bird Sanctuaries

There are many more types of birds than animals in Maharashtra, like the Bulbul, Shama, Cuckoo, Parakeet, Drongoes, Wagtails Flycatchers, Purple Sunbirds, Grey Jungle Fowl, the great Indian Bustard and above all the beautiful peacock. The great Indian Bustard, which is an endangered species, is an ostrich - like bird, found in the Ahmednagar and Sholapur districts.

Pench National Park

Located around 70 kms from Nagpur on an area of 257.26 sq kms is the Pench National Park. This is southern topical dry deciduous forest and is a home to a variety of trees and wild animals. One can spot the tiger, panther, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, blue bull, macaque, langoor, wild boar, bear, wild dogs and civet cat.

Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary

Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of wild animals including a few endangered species namely the tiger, leopard, jungle cat, sloth bear and wild dog.It is common to spot the following wild animals as well: wild boar, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, blue bull, jungle cat, jackal, peacock, jungle fowl and flying squirrel. Other places of other interest around the sanctuary are Prashant Dham at Chaprala, Chaprala Temple and Markanda Temple.

Tipeshwer Sanctuary Bor Wildlife Sanctuary

The following animals are spotted here: the black buck, blue bull, chital, sambar, peacock, hare, snake, monkey, wild boar, bear, wild cat, wolf and jackal.

Wild animals spotted are here are the tiger, panther, bison, blue bull, chital, sambar, peacock, barking deer, chinkara, monkey, wild boar, bear, and wild dog.

Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary

The sole hill resort in the Vidarbha region, it is situated at an altitude of 1118 m and has the added dimension of being the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra. It abounds in wildlife -- panthers, sloth bears, sambar, wild boar, and even the rarely seen wild dogs.
