Mumbai a cluster of seven islands, derives its name from "Mumbadevi", the patron goddess of the Koli fisher folk, its oldest inhabitants. Mumbai, till recently called Bombay, is the "Finance Capital of India" & one of the finest metropolitan in the world. Mumbai will always remain Gateway to India, "India 's Pride". Dazzling shopping arcades, exciting sport activity, night clubs & discotheques, theatre & music, gourmet restaurants and interesting sightseeing. Mumbai offers visitors a heady mix of all this and more.

The Beaches

Mumbai has a number of beaches within the city, the most famous of which is Juhu. The Chowpatty beach is the venue for the Annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival and famous for its stalls which offer local delicacies and snacks. The Goral and Marve beaches, in the northern suburbs, are somewhat quieter. Other beaches which are popular include Madh Island, around 45 kms from the city and reached via Malad; Manori Beach, 40 kms away, and Versova, which is 29 kms from the city.

Elephanta Caves The Gateway of India

The Elephanta caves, in the Bombay harbour, contain some of the most exquisite sculptures in the Deccan. The dating of the caves is shrouded in conflict though they were probably finished some time during the reign of the Silhara kings between the 9th and 12th century. The huge, high-relief works in the main cave, on both sides of the three entrances and on the south wall, are characteristic of the cult of Shiva and considered to be among the most perfect expressions of Indian art of their time.

The Gateway of India, completed in 1924 at an astonishing cost of 21 lakhs, was built to commemorate the visit of the first British monarch to set foot on Indian soil - King George the Fifth with his consort, Queen Mary. It was opened to the public in 1924. Built of yellow basalt, its 26 metre high archway is inspired by a conventional Arch of Triumph. Influences of the 16th century Gujarati style are also evident in its architecture.

Esselworld

India's largest amusement park "Esselworld", spread over a sprawling 64 acres is situated at Gorai, Mumbai. It offers more then 45 thrilling & scintillating rides & games. "Waterworld"  Asia's largest theme water park, with loads of innovative attractions, world's biggest wave pool, heart stopping rides & slides, river adventures & much more. Water kingdom is situated just next to Esselworld.

Mahim & Dadar Nariman Point/Cuffe Parade

The island of Mahim contained the capital of the 13th century king, Bhimdev. A dargah of Makhtum Fahih Ali Paru was built here in 1431. In 1913, a scheme for building three major access roads, running in a roughly north-south direction was started. The first is now called the Western Express highway; the second N. M. Joshi Marg, and the third is the Tulsi Pipe Road.

Nariman Point is one of the posh areas of Mumbai and the business hub of Mumbai. However with the change in economic conditions, many Corporates have been shifted/re-located to other areas of Mumbai i.e. Parel, Worli, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Andheri-Kurla Road and Powai.

Walkeshwar/Malabarhill

The way up to Malabar Hill from Marine Drive is by Walkeshwar Road and Ridge Road, where the sea recedes further and further until, from the top of the Sir Pherozshah Mehta Gardens and the adjoining Kamala Nehru Park which is mainly a Children's park named after the wife of India's first Prime Minister (popularly known as the "the Hanging Gardens") the visitor has a panoramic view of Bombay - the bay, the imposing buildings standing out against the skyline, the colorful Chaupati Beach immediately below, and the faint hills in the distance.
