Clinical Pharmacology |
Curcumin has been shown to
have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti-oxidant,
anti-tumor and hepato-protective (protects liver)
properties. Curcumin is known to inhibit the enzymes
lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase in human platelets,
reduce oxidative stress and decrease cholesterol,
triglycerides as well as free fatty acid levels in
blood. Moreover, protective effect of Curcumin on
alcohol induced liver damage is attributed to inhibition
of expression of NF-kappa B-dependent genes. Curcumin
inhibits the growth of DNA mismatch repair defective
colon cancer cells and therefore, could be of value as a
safe anti-tumor agent for such conditions.
Ginger extract has been known to have significant
anti-inflammatory, anti-emetic, anti-migraine,
anti-oxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic activity. The
anti-inflammatory effect of ginger is thought to be
mediated through inhibition of enzyme lipoxygenase and
cyclooxygenase leading to reduced synthesis of
prostaglandin and leukotriene, the mediators of
inflammation. The anti-emetic effect of ginger is
supposed to be due to local action on gastrointestinal
tract. Anti-oxidant activity of ginger could be
attributed to inhibition of lipid peroxidation. Ginger
has been shown to reduce the cholesterol, LDL, VLDL and
triglyceride levels in animal models.
The Valerian extract has been found to have anxiolytic,
sedative, muscle relaxant and anti-ulcer effects.
Pharmacological properties of valerian extract have been
attributed to increased concentration of the inhibitory
neurotransmitter Gamma Amino Butyric Acid or GABA due to
decrease in re-uptake and increased secretion in the
synaptic cleft. Presence of high level of glutamine in
the extract which converts in to GABA after crossing the
blood–brain barrier could also be contributing.
