- How is it
beneficial?
Cough is a common distressing symptom in a variety of
conditions including common cold and allergies.
Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting cough
suppressant which relieves the dry, irritating cough
by inhibiting the cough center in brain.
Congestion in nose & sinuses is due to swelling
(dilatation) of blood vessels in the mucus lining.
Phenylephrine is a decongestant which constricts the
blood vessels of mucus lining of nose & sinuses and
decreases the secretions thus relieving congestion.
The symptoms of allergies and common cold such as
itching, sneezing and watery eyes are mediated through
histamine. Chlorpheniramine blocks the action of
histamine and thus relieves these symptoms. Besides,
it also has a mild drying effect (anticholinergic
effect) on mucus membranes which relieves running nose
and decreases the secretions.
